In May of 2007, 170 of the Worlds best Freestyle Kayakers converged on my home, the mighty Ottawa River, for what was slated to be the rebirth of Rodeo Kayaking. The catalyst behind this rebirth ... a feature so big and powerful it would finally allow athletes to show case where “Freestyle” kayaking has gone over the years since rodeo last saw excitement, oh wait cartwheels have never been exciting. This amazing feature we are talking is ... Waikiki wave! just joking but it was very close to being true as the water levels for BUSSY ! only came in a day before competition. So event organizers pulled off what no one thought could happen, they pulled a 15 foot wave out of their asses, with a little help from Quebec Hydro and 3 days of hard rain in the Northern watershed. YEAH BUSSY !

Now, if you’re like most local paddlers your thinking, how does this benefit me, now I just get to sit around all day and watch these strangers make sweet love to my beloved wave. If you’re jealous like me you need to find a way to be with her (Bussy), so like the old saying goes “The early bird gets the worm” and for myself and Mr. Nieuwenhuis early comes at 5 am and the crack of dawn. Well worth the pain of putting wet / frozen gear on was having bussy to ourselves for up to 2 hours every morning... but thats another story all together.

This story, is well ... a little less glorious.

Who would have thought that making the worlds best paddlers look good on Video would have been hard work! I figured we’d just show up, film the best tricks out there, slap’em together and walla. Apparently I was mistaken as this was not the case. Myself and Dave found ourselves filming in the blistering sun, with nothing to drink but Redbull, for 9 hrs a day only to return to our “Sports Broadcast Center” for hours upon hours of importing, cutting, editing, rendering, exporting, converting, uploading and on and on. All told we were putting in 15 hr days so that we could supply the world with a 2 min video each day. Pretty cool vids though, and in the end we got to see some impressive boating, paddle Bussy daily, meet some fun people and party pretty damn hard. So I guess I am glad the worlds came to little ol’ Beachburg, and I was able to be apart of what was, and probably will ever be... the Best World Freestyle Kayaking Championship.
